Physical Description

Noopa
Noopa on her workshop stool, with an armful of fresh beeswax tapers
Appearance

Noopa is a short, round, thoroughly well-fed kobold about two foot seven, and she would like you to know that she is round on purpose and has worked very hard at it. Her scales are a warm honey gold, pebbled like the skin of a lemon and fading to soft cream along her belly, her throat, and her thick tail. A little crown of short brown horns sits on her head, her ear frills are wide and apricot pink, and her eyes are big, round, and brown, and almost always crinkled up in a smile. She works in a loose cream shirt with the sleeves shoved up, under a heavy leather apron so spattered with old wax that it has gone stiff, with a dipping spoon, wick shears, and a snack in its pockets and a cloth tucked into the belt for her hands. She stands on a stool to reach the dipping racks, and she is very often found standing on it with an armful of tapers held to her chest like a bunch of flowers, and a look on her face that suggests she is thinking about lunch.

Unique Characteristics

Every candle Noopa makes smells like food. Not faintly, and not by accident: she steeps her wax with crusts, peels, spices, and drippings until it holds the smell of a dish, and then she names the candle after it. Fresh Bread. Honey Butter. Apple Night. Sunday Stew. Burnt Sugar, which was a mistake the first time and is now her best seller. A house with one of her candles lit smells like supper is nearly ready, and people have been known to get up and go and look in the kitchen. She is serious, almost solemn, about her craft. She judges her wax by smell and by the sound it makes on the spoon, she will not rush a candle for anyone, and she likes to say that a candle is only a recipe you don't eat. She is even more serious about food. She is always eating, always cooking, or always on her way to somewhere that sells something, and she has never once in her life been bothered by what that has done to her waistline, except to let out her apron.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Knows wax the way a smith knows iron
  • Generous with food to a fault, and proud of it
  • Happy in her own skin, and makes others feel it too
  • Patient with a process; never rushes a candle
  • Fiercely loyal to Trubbo and every Burrowbough kobold
Challenging Traits
  • Cannot pass a food stall without stopping
  • Snacks at the wax bench, despite the obvious risks
  • Lectures anyone who burns a cheap tallow candle
  • Keeps feeding people who have said no three times
  • Wanders off mid-sentence toward a good smell

A candle's just a recipe you don't eat. Same as baking. Get your heat right, don't rush it, and never, ever skimp on the good stuff.

Round? I'm round. I've worked very hard on it. Now sit down, I've made too much again, and you look like you've had a day.

Trubbo eats one bowl a day. One! So I bring him a second one every night. Someday he's going to eat it, and I'm going to be right there when he does.

Likes
  • Pip's ice cream, any flavor, any weather
  • Nibbin's beeswax, the best in Haven
  • The smell of fresh bread, in a candle or out of one
  • Dipping tapers in the quiet before the shop opens
  • Watching Trubbo eat, which almost never happens
Dislikes
  • Cheap tallow candles that smoke and stink
  • Anyone who rushes a candle, or a stew
  • Being told she ought to eat less (she won't)
  • Wicks trimmed too short
  • An empty pantry

Background & History

Supper in a Candle
Noopa was born in Burrowbough, a kobold village deep in the Geldergreen, on Frostnight 28, 1280, and like every child there she was raised by the whole village. The part of it that claimed her was the chandlery, a smoky little burrow among the oak roots where the village's candles were made, and where Noopa discovered that melting wax is very much like cooking, except that nobody lets you eat it. Burrowbough's candles were tallow, and they smoked and stank, and Noopa decided before she was ten that she could do better. She begged beeswax from the village beekeepers, and later from Nibbin, who took over the hives and has supplied her ever since. At twelve she steeped a pot of wax with bread crusts and a scrap of butter, just to see, and made a candle that smelled exactly like a loaf coming out of the oven. Within a year every burrow in the village smelled like supper all winter long, and the old chandler had quietly handed her the dipping racks.

Half a Lunch
Trubbo was the smallest kit in his year and Noopa was the roundest in hers, and the bigger kits teased them both. Noopa never cared in the slightest. Trubbo cared very much, and got knocked down a great deal, and got straight back up every single time. So Noopa sat down beside him at lunch one day and gave him half of hers, and she has been doing it ever since. When Trubbo left Burrowbough at twelve to follow a wandering monk to the mountains, Noopa wrote to him every month for twelve years. Every letter was about food. She described every meal she ate, every dish the village made for every feast, and every recipe she wanted to try, in loving detail, to a boy living on one bowl of plain grain a day. He kept every one of them. When he came home in 1304, she had a bowl waiting.

Three Hundred Candles
For Funzi's life-pairing feast, Noopa made three hundred candles, each one scented for a dish on Funzi's menu, so that the meeting hall would smell like the feast before a single plate came out. On the night of Goldenleaf 26, 1307, she was still trimming the last of the wicks when Kobbin's alarm rang out. Noopa is not a fast climber, and she knew it. Trubbo came back for her. He carried her up the big beech on his back, set her on a bough, and went straight back down to the lowest branch, where he stood with his back to the trunk for the rest of the night. Noopa had one candle in her apron, a Honey Butter. She lit it and held it up all night, so that the children in the beech could look down and see that Trubbo was still there. The chandlery burned with the other two hundred and ninety-nine. She still has the stub.

The Slow Road
When the rest of Burrowbough set out for Haven, Trubbo stayed behind in the towns at the forest's edge to walk the slowest of the survivors out: the old ones, the hurt ones, and the ones who could not yet bring themselves to leave. Noopa stayed with him, because of course she did. She melted down scraps of tallow begged from butchers, made candles out of them on a borrowed stove, traded the candles for flour and onions, and cooked for the whole straggling group every night of the walk. Nobody went hungry. Several people say it was the best food they have eaten in their lives, and some of them were there for the stew made out of nothing but onions, so they would know. Noopa and Trubbo reached Goodberry together on Harvestide 10, 1307, a week behind everyone else, with every one of their stragglers.

A City Full of Food
Goodberry, Noopa discovered on her first evening, hardly needs candles at all: the city is lit by glowing Lumihoney from the Lumi Bee Sanctuary. She was not discouraged for a moment. Nobody buys her candles to see by, she points out. They buy them so their house smells like supper. She has opened a little shop she calls The Supper Candle, with a stool behind every counter, and Nibbin sends her beeswax from Silmarithil every week. In her first two days in the city she ate her way the whole length of Market Street, Dwarven Stones and knotted bread and bug soup (which she liked), and then she found Pip Bluescale's ice cream and has been back every day since. She has asked three different people whether you can eat Lumihoney, and she has not yet had a straight answer.

Goals & Aspirations

Three Hundred Again
Funzi still has the menu for the life-pairing feast that never happened, and she means to throw it at last, in Haven, for every survivor on Jozub's Roll. Noopa has asked for a copy of the menu. She is going to make all three hundred candles again, one for every dish, and this time they are going to be lit.

The Second Bowl
Trubbo eats one bowl a day, plain, and has done since he was twelve. Every evening Noopa brings him a second, full and hot and made with whatever she thinks he will find hardest to resist. Every evening he eats exactly one spoonful of it, out of respect, and hands it back. She has never missed an evening, and she has no intention of stopping. She does not want him to change who he is. She just wants him to eat.

A Candle for Every Dish in Haven
Noopa intends to make a candle for every dish in Goodberry, and then in Haven, and she has started a book of them. Her current project is a candle that smells like Pip's ice cream. It is giving her a great deal of trouble, because she cannot work out how to make a smell cold, and she has had to visit Pip's every day to keep her research fresh.

ATTENTION!
Noopa is an F-grade kobold candlemaker and no fighter, though she is seldom far from someone who is. Do not let the grade fool you about her craft: she is very likely the finest chandler you will ever meet. She judges wax by smell alone, her tapers burn clean and long, and her candles smell so much like food that they make whole rooms hungry. If you comment on her weight, expect a cheerful and very detailed account of everything she has eaten today. If you insult her in front of Trubbo, expect nothing at all, because you will not see it coming. If you walk into her shop, you will be fed. Refusing is not really an option.
