Beast Bonds: Technical Mechanics
Birth & Bonding
In under 1% of creature births (non-playable races only), a magical egg is laid instead of a traditional offspring. These Beast Bond Eggs contain a soul with latent potential to bond. A sentient being can form a bond with this egg by offering a sliver of their life essence through meditation, willing the bond into existence. This person becomes the Warden of the creature.
- Egg Appearance: Iridescent, warm to the touch, reacts with pulses when near potential Warden.
- Bonding Ritual: Requires a willing soul willing to commit energy and emotion to awaken the being within.
- Communication at Birth: Telepathic emotions and imagery only.
Growth Through Hearts
Beast Bonds consume the hearts of sentient (non-undead) creatures killed by their Warden. Each heart advances the creature’s growth, enhancing its form and intelligence. This is the sole method of advancement.
| Stage | Communication | Form & Abilities |
|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | Emotions & mental images | Infant creature, same diet as base race |
| Infant | 2-word phrases (telepathic) | Eats Warden-style food, can assist in combat, light independence |
| Child | Broken speech ("Go water now") | +20% size, still bestial shape |
| Teen | Full speech, limited vocabulary | Hybridized form begins, semi-bipedal, learns skills |
| Adult | Full speech and conversation | Fully bipedal, humanoid. Strong combat utility. Normal NPC |
Combat Mechanics
- Combat Roles: Each Bond may function as an allied NPC, scaling with maturity.
- Stat Progression: Starts with animal companion stats; each stage grants boosts to all attributes.
- Shared Destiny: If Warden dies, the Bond becomes hostile for 1d4 days, then wanders until either the Warden is revived or the Bond finds a new purpose.
Roleplay Utility
Beast Bonds provide incredible RP opportunities and progression arcs. Over time, the creature may:
- Develop unique personalities, habits, and goals
- Unlock classes, bloodlines and other character-type features
- Form familial, romantic, or rival relationships with NPCs or PCs
Restrictions & Limitations
- Only one Beast Bond may be active per Warden at any time
- Unbonded eggs become inert within 30 days
- Forced bonding sometimes results in creature madness
- Magical effects that prevent death also stop heart harvesting
